Swelling in the legs? Here's what to do

Gonfiore alle gambe? Ecco cosa fare

Swollen and heavy legs can be caused by various factors, from a sedentary lifestyle to excessive exposure to heat. In this article, you can find some remedies for swollen and heavy legs that you can apply right away to start experiencing the much-desired feeling of relief.

Physical activity

Avoid staying in the same position for too long; instead, try to do a little physical exercise every day. Even a simple walk can be good to relieve the feeling of swollen and heavy legs. Physical activity indeed stimulates the circulatory system, helping blood flow more efficiently through the body, including the legs. This can reduce the risk of fluid accumulation and improve the distribution of nutrients and oxygen to the tissues of the legs.

Lift your legs

Another way you can adopt to "de-puff" your legs is to raise your legs against the wall, above heart level, while you are resting. Every day for about ten minutes. This simple exercise can promote fluid drainage and reduce swelling. You can do it by lying on the floor and placing a pillow under your legs.

Massage

A light massage of the legs can improve circulation and help reduce swelling. Gently massage with movements directed from the bottom up. Choose to pair the massage with a moisturizing cream or a nourishing oil to assist in application and help improve the orange peel appearance of the surface.

Compression

Wear gradient compression stockings to help improve blood circulation in the legs. Be sure to choose the appropriate level of compression under the guidance of a doctor.

Hydration

Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day to promote the elimination of toxins and reduce water retention. When the body is well-hydrated, the kidneys are able to function effectively in filtering the blood and removing waste products through urine. Good hydration can help reduce water retention, which is one of the common causes of swelling in the legs. On the contrary, when the body is dehydrated, it can retain excess fluids in the tissues, including those in the legs, causing swelling and a feeling of heaviness.

Balanced diet

Limit sodium (salt) intake in your diet, as excess sodium can contribute to water retention. Instead, prefer foods rich in potassium, such as bananas, spinach, and avocados, which can help balance sodium levels in the body.

Avoid excessive heat

Prolonged exposure to heat can worsen swelling. It is better to limit exposure to hot environments and prefer light and breathable clothing. Exposure to heat can indeed cause excessive sweating, which is a temporary loss of fluids from the body. In response to this loss, the body may try to retain more fluids, causing water retention and worsening swelling.

Improves posture

Try to avoid standing or sitting for long periods. Change your position often and try to maintain a correct posture.

Regularly undergo body treatments based on menthol.

Body treatments with menthol can help reduce swollen and heavy legs thanks to their refreshing, vasodilating, and analgesic properties. Menthol is a natural compound that is often extracted from peppermint oil and is known for its beneficial effects on circulation and relief from pain and feelings of heaviness.
